GMC to launch Agriculture Marketing Information Service
Georgetown, GINA, June 30, 2009.
In keeping with the Agriculture Ministry's drive to improve marketing support for farmers and exporters, its agency Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC), has joined force with cellular service provider Digicel to launch the Agriculture Marketing Information System (AMIS).
The AMIS is an unprecedented mechanism which is the outcome of months of collaboration between Digicel and the GMC in an effort to build a comprehensive and cohesive database that captures pertinent market information on key commodities such as fruits, vegetables and rice.
Digicel subscribers such as farmers, agro-processors, exporters, agri-business investors and residents across the country will be able to use the Short Messaging Service (SMS) to access market information on agriculture commodities. With the use of a handset, subscribers will be required to type in the name of the commodity – ‘rice', for example – and send message to 1010.
The launch of the AMIS will take place on Wednesday July 1, 2009 at Digicel's Head Office, Kingston.
